Ceramic Artist Naoto ISHII
陶芸家 石井直人
1954年京都生まれ。広島大学総合科学部卒業。広島県山縣郡戸河内町小板にて農耕生活を営み、伊賀「土楽陶苑」にて修業。1992年、京都・京丹波町に原野を取得、開墾を始める。同地に古民家を移築し、工房「独華陶邑」、庵「懐玄軒」を建設。1994年、登り窯を築く、初窯焼成。Axel vervoordtで展示した際には具体美術協会と作家と並べられ、コズミックワンダーともするなど、現代アートと展示する機会は多い。
Born in 1954 in Kyoto. Graduated from Hiroshima University Department of Integrated Arts and Sciences. After spending his early career farming in Northern Hiroshima, Ishi trained at a pottery studio known as Doraku-Toen in Iga, Mie prefecture. In 1992, he acquired a wild land in Kyotamba town in Kyoto. He then relocated an old Japanese house to the land to create his own workshop. After building a Noborigama Kiln, he had the first firing in 1994. Ishi is known to exhibit his pottery alongside contemporary art, such as cosmic wonder gallery and Axel vervoordt.

素材である土は各々の風土のメッセージを凝縮したものです。素材の性質に沿って成形してゆきます。この壺は海から湧いて来たあぶくのようなものです。 焼成の激しさからボカンと裂けた姿が定着しました。１０年以上に渡って使い続けてきた板です。 燃料である松や雑木の降灰が玉のしずくとなっています。私が窯変と呼んでいるものは 火床に寝かして 焼成いたしているものの表情を現します。 その時々の焼成の状態に依拠する割合が大きく、あるものは裂けて、砕かれますが、かろうじて、残る物の中に、予期せぬ姿を現すものがあります。 時間軸を超越するものは果たして 人の力の及ぶものでしょうか。
My material – dirt – is concentrated messages from each unique place and climate. Shapes were determined naturally by the characteristics of the material. This vase is like a bubble forming from the ocean. It was torn due to the harsh firing. These Shelboards I had used over ten years. The ashfall of firewood such as pine turned into droplets. The changes in kiln vary each time. Some torn and burst but what remains come out in a form unpredicted. What transcends time is beyond human control.
